Nipper
Double vs Urban Detour
The great buggy debate rages on, on our forums day after day. Four
wheels or three, side by side or tandem style, umbrella or fold
up, fixed wheel or swivel ? The lists are endless, but if you've
decided on a three wheel version, you may well find yourself agonising
between the Nipper Double and the Urban Detour. Twinsclubber Sally
asked for help on the forum in Jan 05, and if you're in the same
position, maybe the following will help...

"Hi, I am thinking of getting either a Nipper Double or an
Urban Detour as my twins are 1 soon. Do you think they will benefit
from it? At the moment we have a M&P twin Aria which is great but,
the twins are quite heavy & it's getting heavy & awkward to push.
Do you think I will be better off with one of these 3 wheelers?
Please tell me the pros & cons of each & your experiences of these
pushchairs.
* Is the Nipper awkward to steer around corners without the swivel
wheel?
* Do you think the seat is upright enough for 1 year olds?
* Can you fit a Lascal buggy board to it?
* Will it fit in the boot of a Chrysler Voyager?
The Urban Detour looks big, wide & heavy BUT, it has a swivel wheel.
What are your experiences of this pushchair?
* Is it heavy to push?

I appreciate your replies, thank you!"

Nipper
People say :
"OK the Nipper - I have one of these bought when J & T were
11 months old because the Maclaren was getting to heavy to push.
The Nipper is light (9kg) easy to push never had probs with swivel
wheel, the seats are 'tipped' back but this is because of the engineering
of the nipper as a 'real' all terrain pram (the urban detour is
not a atp).
Never found the seats a problem you can tighten the straps at the
back and I bought small pillows (IKEA 60p) to put behind them when
sitting up and then use them for their head when lying down and
sleeping in the nipper. I could easily get our nipper in the back
of our Espace. You can fit a buggy board onto the nipper (seen lady
with one) not sure what make it was though.
Have pushed an Urban Detour and it's nice to push but heavier than
Nipper and bulkier to fold. I had one puncture in mine, it happened
at school but I carry a spare inner and 2 spoons. I fixed it in
about 4 mins, oh also have little pump attached to side of Nipper
Most people use the slime stuff.
The difference between these two prams are that one is a 'fashion'
pram and one is an 'all terrrain' pram. Depends what your really
going to use it for I walk everywhere and live at the bottom of
Ilkley Moor so the Nipper is best for meas I can get it up the moor
etc. They are both easier to push than say........ a Maclaren with
2 little 11 month heffers in it! "

"I really like my nipper, it is very light and smooth and
only 77cm wide compared to the Urban Detour which is about 89cm
I think, which is quite a bit wider and I would be v. worried about
not getting through doorways.
* Is the Nipper awkward to steer around corners without the swivel
wheel? No, maybe a little bit with one hand.
* Do you think the seat is upright enough for 1 year olds? Don't
know as mine are only 6 months but I have heard people say that
you can just use cushions.
* Can you fit a Lascal buggy board to it? Don't know, I know there
is definately one board that fits it though
* Will it fit in the boot of a Chrysler Voyager? I'm sure it
will, ours fits in the back of our Renault Espace. "

* Is the Nipper awkward to steer around corners without the swivel
wheel? No not at all - it rubs a little but is steerable with
one hand.
* Do you think the seat is upright enough for 1 year olds? My
2 and a half year old sits in it quite comfortably.
* Can you fit a Lascal buggy board to it?
No you need the kiddy board. We have one on the back and
it is brilliant. Our twins (6 mths) are in the buggy whilst our
toddler is on the kiddyboard, she is very happy on it (see right)
and can see over the top. You just twist the handbrake around a
bit.
* Will it fit in the boot of a Chrysler Voyager? We have the
Grand Voyager and it stands upright very easily in the boot with
all the wheels on."

"Hello, another Nipper fan here! I have had mine 18 months
and have never had a puncture (we have slime in the tyres). I have
no trouble with corners, kerbs or the tilted seats. You can actually
put a cushion behind the child to sit them up abit, or they can
lean forward, but mine at 2 1/2 (nearly!) HAVE NEVER OBJECTED TO
GOING IN IT AND THEY LOVE IT! It has made my life so much easier!
I don't think you can go wrong with either really, as you can see,
most on here that have either love theirs. It all comes down to
whether you can manage a wider and heavier pram or get used to the
fixed wheel and pay more!"

"I have the Nipper. I liked the look of the Detour..ie the
bumper bar and the swivel wheel, but was put off by the weight,
width and it isn't that much cheaper than the Nipper. I don't regret
getting the Nipper, I just wish I could fit 3 in it for when baby
is born in June!. I will still use it when out with dh."

"I have just got a Nipper. For the lst year we got through
a variety of prams and spent a fortune. I wish that I had bought
the Nipper in the first place. I was put off by the wheel being
non swivel but now I just do not notice it and pushing it is a dream.
We took it out into the forest last week and it was fantastic!!!
My 3 year old balances himself in between the twins when he gets
tired - not ideal really but the pram is still really easy to push.
It fits through most doors- I think with the Urban Detour you would
struggle with a lot of doors, plus it will be harder getting around
the shops. Got mine from kiddicare for £236 a couple of weeks ago."

"* Is the Nipper awkward to steer around corners without the
swivel wheel? Nope - it's easy peasy lemon squeezy!
* Do you think the seat is upright enough for 1 year olds? Yes!
* Can you fit a Lascal buggy board to it? No - you'd need a
Kiddyboard (fits to rear axle).
* Will it fit in the boot of a Chrysler Voyager? Haven't tried
it but should imagine so." Claire. DD & DS 22/12/01 (35

"It really doesn't need a swivel wheel honestly. If you do
decide on the Nipper you won't be disappointed. My girls are 3 1/4
- bought it when they were 18 months old (if it had been around
when they were born I would have had one then - and never needed
another buggy) and am only now thinking of selling it as they hardly
ever use a puchchair."

"I got the Nipper with Shopping basket, and I think it's great.
I get quite a lot in there. I got the footmuch from Out n'About
, they are ok but I know someone who uses the Maclaren footmuffs
with a Nipper which are a lot comfier. The ones I've got are not
great when the babies are sat up. "

Urban
Detour people say :
"Hiya, I don't know about the Nipper I'm afraid, but I do
have one of the older style Urban Detours with the bicycle type
metal wheels and I love it!! I have had so many double buggies and
have to say that this is my favourite!! The Urban Detour looks big,
wide & heavy BUT, it has a swivel wheel.
* Is it heavy to push? No, it is really easy to push, even with
one hand and over most terrain. Its even easy when I have my twins
in it, my 2 year old on the hood and my 4 year old sat on the footplate!!
* Do you think the seat is upright enough for 1 year olds? Yes,
if you don't then it fastens with straps that clip together and
you could tie these up a bit more.
* Can you fit a Lascal buggy board to it? No, but I sit my two
year old on the hood if she gets tired, she is quite comfy on there
and it has a big metal bar to support her. Just don't let go!!
* Will it fit in the boot of a Chrysler Voyager? I have no idea
as I don't know how big these boots are, it would fit in the boot
of our old Mondeo.
I think it is a really good all round pushchair, the only down
sides are that it is one of the widest but saying that I have never
had any problems getting it through doors. Twins are really comfy
in it and I love it!! My only wish is that it weighed less and wasn't
quite so wide".

"I've never had a Nipper so can't comment on it, but I've
had the older style Urban Detour with the big wheels and now have
the newer version with the smaller wheels.
Pros: lovely to push, even with one finger and loads of shopping
underneath. seats are very roomy. I love it.
Cons : Very heavy, not suitable for getting in and out of car unless
you're into weights! It's very wide, you have to take the back wheels
off to get through doors, the seats need tying up as they do lay
down quite far. it just fits in our Galaxy and I don't think there's
much difference in boot-size with the Chryslers. "

"We bought an Urban Detour just after Xmas in Mothercare
where they are currently on sale, for approx £160. The Nipper is
lovely and light but being a towny I thought it was easier to have
the urban with a swivel wheel. The urban fits in the back of my
Astra with 1 of the wheels removed (just a clip on clip off system)"

"Haven't got a Nipper but I do have the Urban Detour and
I love it, it fits in my boot if I take the wheels off (I have a
Toledo). It is a dream to push."

It's horses for courses really - the best advice would be to seek
out other mums with twins/triplets and ask them if you can try out
their buggy to help you make your decision.
A few important things to check are
- Will it fit in your car
- Will it fit through your front door
- Can you get past it once it's in your hallway (you'll have to
do this to get babes out, even if you plan to collapse it after)
